President and Chair - ASBEC
The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) is a body of peak organisations committed to a vision of more sustainable, productive and resilient buildings, communities and cities. With more than 40 members spanning industry and professional associations, non-government organisations and government observers, ASBEC is led by a highly collaborative and effective Board of industry leaders. ASBEC’s longstanding and highly respected President and Chair Ken Maher AO, has announced that he will retire from the ASBEC Board at the next Annual General Meeting in November 2022. ASBEC is now seeking applications from industry leaders with a passion for and strong track record in sustainability to assume the role.
As President, the role leads the organisation with the authority and credibility of an acknowledged leader in the field with a passion for creating a sustainable, climate-resilient built environment. The President plays a key leadership role in policy-focused member meetings and acts as a spokesperson for the Board and organisation, including direct advocacy with senior bureaucrats and/or Ministers. A key part of the role is to lead and facilitate Council meetings of the full ASBEC membership (60-80 people) three times per year.
As Chair, the role leads the Board consistent with best practice governance principles, facilitating the effective contribution of all directors, and constructive, respectful relations between all Board directors and between the Board and ASBEC management. The Chair also provides support and mentoring to the Executive Director on a regular basis.
Key and essential skills and qualities being sought include:
- Past experience chairing a public, private and/or member-based board;
- High level conceptual and strategic thinking skills; high degree of financial literacy;
- An understanding and passion for sustainability within the built environment sector;
- Contemporary governance education and best practice corporate principles (e.g. AICD accreditation).
In addition to the skills and experience listed above, the successful candidate will have values aligned to ASBEC’s and an established and credible reputation as an industry leader traversing public and private sectors. Sophisticated communication and presentation skills, strong leadership and an ability to facilitate independent thought, critical thinking and collaborative behaviours that drive effective Board functioning will be essential to the success of the new President and Chair. This represents an outstanding opportunity to contribute to an organisation that is influencing change and reform in a thriving infrastructure sector.
