The organisation

Ambulance Tasmania (AT) provides emergency ambulance care and transport services and a non-emergency patient transport service through a network of 54 urban, rural and remote ambulance stations throughout Tasmania. It also provides integrated, high quality, pre-hospital emergency and medical care, health transport and medical retrieval services to the Tasmanian community. The Tasmanian Government has made significant investments into ambulance services commencing in 2018/19, providing a foundation to improve both the infrastructure of the service and promote the health and wellbeing of employees to drive operational service improvement. A rare opportunity has arisen for an outstanding leader to shape the organisational strategy and support the Tasmanian Government's objective to provide an integrated and sustainable health system.

The role

The Chief Executive will report to the Deputy Secretary Community, Mental Health and Wellbeing, and be an integral member of the Department of Health Executive. As the appointed delegate of the Secretary under the Ambulance Services Act 1982, the Chief Executive (CE) is responsible for the development and implementation of the vision and goals that ensure the minimisation of the social and economic impact of medical and other emergencies on the Tasmanian community. In a context of operational performance improvement and cultural reform, the CE will provide effective strategic advice to Government and lead the co-ordination and development of initiatives that improve clinical safety and quality, patient access to services, and improved health outcomes for the community to support Government's commitment to improve healthcare for all Tasmanians. The CE will also be responsible for all aspects of operational performance, sound corporate Governance and will represent the interests of Tasmania externally at both a national and international level through the Council of Ambulance Authorities and other entities as required.

Selection criteria:

To be appointed you will have proven leadership and management skills of the highest order, with extensive knowledge and experience in emergency management and/or first response service. Your style will be collaborative and inclusive, with the ability to balance strategic and operational priorities and embed service improvements across the service whilst contributing more broadly to the Health Executive. Naturally you will be resilient, with sophisticated interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills and a proven ability to influence, and build enduring and effective stakeholder relationships. Your values will be aligned to that of the Department and you will possess a high degree of self-awareness, personal drive and integrity and will appreciate the context of the cultural environment and the responses required. Importantly, you will be able to deliver results in a highly visible environment.
